History
Xella is a young company, which introduced itself for the first time at the BAU Trade Fair in Munich in 2003. Xella resulted from a merger between the Duisburg company, Haniel-Bau Industrie GmbH and the Munich company, Ytong AG with Fels-Werke GmbH in Goslar. Today headquarters are located in Duisburg.
Important Information on Company and Product History
- Calcium silicate bricks were produced for the first time 150 years ago
- In 1929 Gas or aerated, autoclaved concrete was first produced in Xyhult, Sweden. Yxhults Anghärdade Gasbetong later became Ytong
- During the 1940's Josef Hebel opened the first factory for industrial production of construction elements for walls, ceilings and roofs.
- In 1948 Haniel Bau-Industrie started producing calcium silicate bricks
- In 1952 Ludwig Erhardt, Minister of Economic Affairs at that time supported use of Ytong for redevelopment as a "recognised, good and modern construction" material.
- In 1967 Ytong blocks were sold in the yellow foil for the first time. This yellow foil packaging is an important part of the brand strategy
- In 1997 Ytong started the first joint venture in China
- In 1999 the Fels-Werke GmbH became Germany's second largest producer of lime after buying out the lime plants in Rüdersdorf near Berlin and Saal near Regensburg.
- In 2002 Haniel, a German family company, formed Xella by buying out a new construction materials company
- In 2003 Xella was launched at the BAU Trade Fair in Munich - the Research and Development Centre was opened near Potsdam
- 2006/07 International expansion in Eastern Europe, China and Russia
- 2008 Pai Partners and Goldmann Sachs Capital Partners bought out Xella
- 2010 Plants opened in Rumania and Chins, Ytong Poland celebrated its 15th anniversary.
